Scientific Name: Taxodium mucronatum (Family Mucronatum, subfamily taxoidea)

The name of the Sabino was put by the Spaniards due to its likeness with the European sabina (juniperus sabina L.) Etymologically ahuehuete means "old man from water" in the Nahuatl language.



The Tree is generally 20 to 40 meters high, it has a thick trunk with irregular abundances frequently divided in two or three from the base, such divisions are developed almost independently. The young trees present a wide top and extended branches, the summit of the mature tree is covered with a falsely parasite plant called hall commonly (tillandsia usnecides).

Their age is more than 2000 years. It was the Emperor Montezuma's favorite tree for the establishment of his gardens and walk areas.

The tar contained in the resin of the trunk is used against micotic illnesses of the skin and for the relief of rheumatic pains. It loosens nerves, heal wounds and it prevents stomach pains.
